Grantmaking Objectives

Hawthornden Foundation takes great pride in having a focused approach to grantmaking and does not accept unsolicited proposals or letters of inquiry.  The Foundation will identify and contact selected organizations to explore mutual interests, priorities and needs. The Foundation may then invite full proposals for consideration. While an invitation does not guarantee funding, all invited proposals will receive careful review and consideration.

The Foundation supports organizations in the literary arts, such as: literary presses and journals, book festivals, literary centers, literary presenters, literary service organizations, public libraries, and organizations that support the development of youth as readers and writers.

The Foundation’s grantmaking will be guided by the following overall goals:

  • To support writers, which include: creative writing in all languages, and creative writers of all kinds – poets, novelists, short-story writers, playwrights, scriptwriters, creative nonfiction writers and essayists.

  • To develop readers, by supporting educational institutions.

  • To support organizations that serve underserved literary communities, including in parts of the world with weak or non-existent literary infrastructures.

Pursuant to the requirements of the IRS, only US charities or non-US charities that are the equivalent of a U.S. public charity are eligible.

We ask that you not send proposals or letters of inquiry by mail or email unless requested to do so by a Foundation staff member. Unsolicited grant proposals will not be accepted. For inquiries related to a grant in progress, email grants@hawthornden.org. If your inquiry is related to Hawthornden’s residencies, please email us at inquiry@hawthornden.org.
